Becoming a Teacher to Grow as an Individual and Help Others Grow
By Madelaine McCracken
I want nothing more than to be intrinsically happy. Ever since the age of eight, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. I loved the idea of helping others become the best person they can be. This ideology has never wavered. Currently, I am enrolled at Mount Royal University. I am in my third year of my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. The dream of becoming a teacher will be a reality by winter of 2018. This was not an easy feat through as I have gone through many personal experiences to be where I am now. My jobs, my friends, my family, and my intrinsic motivation have shaped me into the woman I am today and frankly, I am quite thankful of each of these unique aspects of my life.
Family
My family have never discouraged my dreams of becoming a teacher even though we couldn’t afford it. Finances have always been hard for my family. This is why I am taking out student loans and applying for as many scholarships as I can to get through university! Personally, I have found that this has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. If I did not accept to take up this form of debt, I would not be currently enrolled in school.
Loving Onself
Not only this, I would not have been exposed to the opportunities that I currently have. I never would have been able to form the current friendships I have now, become a Resident Adviser nor a past president of a club, be a member of the Indigenous Housing Program at my school, or would not of been able to run for my school’s student council. I am extremely thankful that I can use these funds as a means to achieve the best university experience I possibly can. However, I cannot fully endorse this financial aspect for achieving the goals that I have. These opportunities only became available to me because I am a firm believer in loving oneself and having an open mind as well as an open heart to new people and to new opportunities.
Journey of Self Adoration
I have lost friendships due to this mindset. It has never been my intention for anyone to feel inferior to me due to this; however, I am not heartbroken to lose these friendships. As a soon to be teacher, I want nothing more than for my students to achieve their dreams and to feel the best they possibly can about themselves. It will also be important for them to know that within this journey of self adoration, there might be some losses that occur; this will allow them to grow. Through my journey, it allowed me to develop into who I am meant to be. It never made me fearful to make new friends nor grasp new opportunities that arose.
Everyday that we live, it is important to embrace life to the fullest and not be afraid to take chances. If we do take these chances, it could possibly lead us to love, to financial fulfilment, to education, or even a new animal; the opportunities are endless! The best thing we can do for ourselves is to trust ourselves. To make embracive decisions that will positively impact our self-development as life is an ever growing experience. I am not done growing, especially with my journey in university, in teaching, and within myself. I am excited to see who I will ultimately become everyday.
