Girls’ Day in Japan
HCM celebrated Girls’ Day in Japan as part of our initiative, “Women’s Day, Everyday.” March 3 is Girls’ Day in Japan (also known as Hinamatsuri), which means Doll Festival. On Girls’ Day parents wish and pray for healthy growth and happiness for their daughters. The event is celebrated by displaying traditional dolls and enjoying special dishes and desserts.
The celebration of Girls’ Day has its origins in the Heian (794-1192) tradition of hina-asobi, meaning doll play, where noble children played with paper dolls. It is believed that the tradition of displaying dolls was a way to ward off evil spirits. In a purifying ritual, imported from China, one would transfer misfortune to a doll and then throw away the doll to release the misfortune and bad luck.
Traditionally, grandparents or parents of a newborn baby girl provide a set of hina dolls. The relatives either purchase new dolls for the girls or pass down their own set of dolls. It is also common for friends and relatives to give a baby girl dolls and accessories for their hina dolls.
To get rid of the dolls they are thrown in a river. Some areas of Japan still practice this tradition and people can attend the ‘doll floating.’
HCM Lifestyle honours Girls’ Day in Japan and reminds us all to celebrate being a woman. Therefore, no matter where we grow up, work, live and play – we are all strong and passionate women. Show your strength and celebrate yourself and your fellow women.
