What does it mean to be a woman?

Well, sure as heck, a lot more than Sugar and Spice and Everything nice!

As women, we tend to identify ourselves most easily as WIFE, MOTHER, DAUGHTER, SISTER. The problem with these “roles” is that your “success” depends on another person’s happiness. We get caught up wearing so many hats we have a hard time identifying what it means to be ourselves.

The image of “Being a Woman” that I hope to share with my daughter is based on 3 things—Beauty, Strength, and Leadership.

Beauty

The female body is beautiful. We have the unique ability to grow other humans inside our bellies. We have curves and soft places that allow for mystery and beauty.

Let’s learn to worship our bodies. Love them from an early age. Care for them, protect them. Feed them beautiful food, move them beautiful ways. In all shapes and sizes, the female body is beautiful.

As a fitness instructor, I have always used the line, “Work out because you LOVE your body, not because you HATE it.” I have loved this line from the first time I saw it. We need to be ok LOVING OURSELVES MORE.

Women, stop beating yourself up. Stand in front of your mirror and tell her she’s beautiful! Tell her until she believes it. Confidence is SKILL you need to learn. Girl! LOVE YOURSELF!!

Strength

Oh, girl, hold on. This life is not easy, and there is no point pretending it’s going to be. You will have to be strong and be BRAVE in your life to get what you want. You will have to work harder, and it might not be fair, but it’s just the way it is, so suck it up.

We need to be strong enough to deal with all the SHOULDS we deal with daily. I should be doing this; I should do that. “SHOULDING” ourselves to death takes a lot of strength to get past. And that’s the pressure we put on ourselves.

You also have to be strong to deal with the extras. The extra glance your way, the extra-long glance that moves up and down your body. The Extra comment about your body in the workplace or in school. The strength to get through a day of high school as a girl with a developing body.

Girl, you are Strong!

Another note about Strength ladies, Women… don’t be afraid of lifting weights. A Strong female body is a beautiful thing. And no, I’m not talking about the image in the mirror or how your pants fit. I’m talking about the strength to change the water jug or hang a shelf—the strength to get out of bed every morning without back pain.

As a trainer, I have watched women learn to fall in love with themselves. Learn to fall in love with being strong. Know your strength, Own it, Use it. Don’t be afraid to be strong.

Strong is Beautiful.

Leadership

Women, we are leaders. If you are not a leader, you should be. I’m not talking about formal training or leading a crew at work or even Leading your family at home.

Ladies, once you have made it, once you feel comfortable in your own skin, once you know your beauty and your strength you are not done. I don’t mean when you’ve achieved a certain level of status or once you have enough followers on Instagram, I mean now.

If you have been through something and you know you have a lesson that can benefit the next girl, it’s your RESPONSIBILITY to share and help them through it.

“Empowered Women Empower Women” Be empowered, Be a leader.

Share where you tripped, so others don’t have to. Hold up the light to let others find their way out of the dark. Make a phone call to get that friend up and out of her house today. Share an inspirational quote that spoke to you.

Tell others about your experiences, so we don’t ever have to feel alone! We need to teach the next generation of women their worth to help them get there faster and with fewer bruises. Teach her she doesn’t ever have to fit in any pre-formed box of anyone’s expectations.

You only got to where you are because of the people who went before you. If they maybe didn’t “break that barrier” for you, they sure made sure the top was loosened so you could break through it for yourself. You’re not alone in this, you never were, and we need to be sure we are available for the next generation.

Women, Be Beautiful, Be Strong, Know your worth so you can help lead others.
